What are the 4Cs of Diamond Engagement Ring Selection

Friday, January 27, 2012 | 9:15 pm

One of the most important things that are associated with courtship and wedding is the engagement ring. This jewellery piece is often given by a man who is decides to ask her special woman to marry him.

The custom of courtship says that the man should buy the ring for the woman. Yet choosing the ideal ring can be hard. To stave away the confusion, one should have rudimentary knowledge about the 4Cs of diamond quality. These are as vital as the diamond’s look on the wearer’s hand.

1. Carat
Carat weight is about the mass of the diamond. A single carat equals 200 milligrams. The point unit, which reflects one one-hundredth of a single carat, or 2 milligrams, is often used to determine the mass of diamonds that are less than one carat. The cost per carat is dependent on the total carat weight. The price goes up correspondingly as the diamond becomes larger and heavier.

2. Clarity
As the word implies, clarity is the mineral’s level of transparency. The clarity of the diamond depends on the amount of internal imperfections, widely known as inclusions. These imperfections may come in the form of other elements in the diamond’s carbon composition such as boron or nitrogen. Imperfections may also refer to crystals of a material other than carbon. They may even come from structural imperfections such as very small cracks, pits, or dents. A diamond’s clarity may also be dependent on the size, number, shade, location, visibility, and orientation of the imperfections.

3. Colour
A diamond only shows its real colour when it is completely buffed and polished. Theoretically, the ideal diamond is one that is completely clear, with no hues or colors to interfere with its transparency. But in in reality, every diamond has a faint color. Typically, a diamond with a yellow init is not as valuable as one with an interesting blue or pink color.

4. Cut
In its raw form, a diamond is a shapeless glob. Thus, it must be cut, shaped, buffed, and polished to become gem-worthy. Cutting a diamond perfectly is the job of an expert master craftsman.

When choosing diamond earrings and engagement rings, take note of these 4Cs.
